Copyrights

The costs for copying a passage depend on two factors. First it has to be determined if the literature is foreign or home grown, second the passage is either short or non-short. A copied piece of literature is home grown if it has been published in the Netherlands, the copied passage is foreign when it has been published abroad.

Short or non-short
According to the rules composed by the V.S.N.U., De Nederlandse Uitgeversbond and the Stichting Publisher Rights Organisation, a passage qualifies as short if:

-It consists of a maximum of 10.000 words from a book;
-It consists of a maximum of 8.000 words from a magazine;
-It doesn’t span more than a third of the original work.

A passage qualifies as non-short if:

-It consists of more than 10.000 words from a book;
-It consists of more than 8.000 words from a magazine;
-It spans more than a third of the original work.

Stichting Publicatie- en Reproductierechten Organisatie (PRO)
New copied passages will be submitted to the Stichting Publicatie- en Reproductierechten Organisatie (PRO) for review. Non-short passages require additional forms to be completed. These forms can be found on the website or can be picked up in the Erasmus Shop. The following data is required for any request:

1. The ISBN/ISSN number
2. The publisher
3. The publishers country of residence
4. The total number of pages copied
5. The total number of words copied
6. The title of the original literature.

Without the above information no permission can be granted for copying passages into a reader. The Erasmus Shop will maintain contact with PRO. The fees PRO charges will be calculated in the selling price of the readers.
